Layton, UT – While the prices of goods and services continue to climb across the nation, the local rates to process recyclables as well as dispose of out-of-district and pre-chipped or shredded clean green waste are on the decline locally. At their last meeting, the Administrative Control Board of Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District (WIWMD) reduced three key rates.
“These adjustments are intended to encourage the diversion and beneficial use of green waste and recyclables while supporting operational needs at our facilities,” said WIWMD Executive Director Preston Lee.
The new rates became effective upon the Board’s vote September 2, 2026. See the new fee schedule here: www.wasatchintegrated.gov/fees/
CLEAN GREEN WASTE:
WIWMD slashed its out-of-district green waste rate in half, dropping rates from $70 to $35 per ton. This will help WIWMD meet its carbon demands. The three critical components of compost are nitrogen, carbon, and water; and green waste provides the carbon WIWMD is currently in need of.
“This material will be upcycled into saleable products and will not impact the remaining life of the landfill,” said Lee, who has been with the District for 24 years.
Clean green waste includes lawn clippings, manure, chipped limbs, tree and shrub trimmings, wood pallets and clean lumber. It does not include treated wood such as plywood; particle board; siding; and painted, stained or pressure-treated lumber.
CHIPPED CLEAN GREEN WASTE:
WIWMD reduced its rate for pre-chipped or shredded clean green waste more than half, dropping the $35 rate to $15 per ton. These materials will also help boost the District’s carbon supply.
“This rate reduction is intended to incentivize customers to bring pre-chipped or shredded clean green waste to the Davis Green Waste Recycling Facility to support ongoing green waste processing,” said Lee, noting that this will also reduce the use of the District’s grinder.
CO-MINGLED RECYCLABLE MATERIAL:
The Board also reduced the rate for processing co-mingled recyclables at the Davis Material Recovery Facility (MRF) from $50 to $45 per ton “to encourage increased use of the facility,” Lee said.
