Syracuse, UT – Ever wondered what to do with your old skis, bikes, tires, PVC pipes, and even mattresses?
In an effort to reduce what goes into our landfill, the Utah Recycling Alliance (URA) will be hosting a Collection of Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM) event conveniently located at the Syracuse Park & Ride (3221 S. 2000 West) Saturday, Oct. 17 from 9 am. to noon.
“These pop-up events help residents repurpose and recycle materials that would otherwise be landfilled,” said URA Vice President Robi Overson. “These materials are items that are capable of being recycled, though they are not accepted in curbside collection bins.”
Items that can be recycled that day include batteries, bicycles, CDs, DVDs, computers, laptops, monitors, electronic waste, cords, ink and toner cartridges, light bulbs, mattresses and box springs, scrap metal, mobile devices, printers, ski equipment, Styrofoam, tires, tubes, carpet, paper, TVs, and even used toothbrushes. Mattresses may be limited and there may be a charge for bulky items such as refrigerators, TVs, and monitors.
CHaRM coordinates with vendors such as Bicycle Collective, Assetworx for e-waste, Terracycle for oral care, Atlas for Styrofoam, Ski Trucks, Recyclops for plastic clamshells, Recycle IT for mattresses, Red’s Metal Recycling, and Liberty Tire Recycling. Their e-waste recyclers are certified for data destruction.
Although this is the first event of its kind in Syracuse, Overson hopes it catches on. At a recent event in Holladay, 282 vehicles took advantage of the CHaRM event, diverting 17,823 pounds of waste from the landfill.
URA has six programs including CHaRM Events, Fix-It Clinics, Garbage Grab, Zero Waste Awards, Trash Talk Podcast, and Green Drinks Social Event. Overson hopes every city in Davis County hosts at least one URA event annually.
Syracuse is funding the event through URA grants and in partnership with Wasatch Integrated Waste. Staff from all three entities will volunteer their time to direct the events Saturday, and elected officials from nearby cities may be hand observing operations before hosting their own event.
