OUR LOCATION
The Davis Transfer Station is co-located with the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Layton, Utah. The Transfer Station serves as a hub to efficiently route waste – as part of a long-term waste management plan for the district.
How the Transfer Station Works
1. Weighing In
When a commercial hauler arrives, the truck first stops at the scale house. Here, the load is weighed and verified before entering the facility.
2. The Tipping Floor
Trucks proceed to the “tipping floor,” a large area where waste is dumped on the left side of the floor. Recyclables are dumped on the right side of the floor to be processed through the MRF. The tipping floor is designed so that waste on the left side never co-mingles with the recyclables on the right side. This enables equipment operators to efficiently direct each stream toward its appropriate destination.
3. Loading for Transport
A front-loader operator transfers the waste from the left side of the floor into trailers bound for the Bayview Landfill about 7 miles north of Elberta in Utah County. A built-in scale displays the tonnage being loaded into each trailer.
Why Waste Goes to The Bayview Landfill
Landfills have finite lifespans. Eventually, they reach capacity, so communities must plan ahead for long-term disposal options. By transferring waste now, we can lessen the financial and environmental burden of transferring all Davis and Morgan Counties’ waste in the future.
The Journey to Bayview
The Bayview Landfill is approximately 108 miles from the transfer station—a trip that takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes each way.
Safety First
The transfer station team makes several round trips to the Bayview Landfill each day, five days a week. Safety is the top priority. Before each trip, drivers perform a full D.O.T. Pre-Trip Inspection.
Arrival at the Bayview Landfill
When a transfer truck reaches Bayview, the trailer is dropped in a designated receiving area. A Bayview Landfill employee then transports it into the active landfill cell for proper disposal.
What’s Special About the Bayview Landfill
Bayview is operated by the Northern Utah Environmental Resource Agency (NUERA), a coalition of four regional waste-management organizations, including Wasatch Integrated. Waste from all member districts is compacted, covered, and sealed at this site. Bayview is a well-managed, modern landfill that’s able to properly and safely dispose of thousands of tons of waste per day.
Capacity & Scale
Bayview is over 800 acres and is projected to provide more than 100 years of disposal capacity, depending on future waste volumes.
Construction & Environmental Protections
Bayview is built similarly to modern engineered landfills, using individually constructed cells to maximize airspace efficiency.
Notable features include:
- A triple-layer synthetic liner—the first of its kind in Utah when installed during the 1990s.
- Continuous monitoring of groundwater and soil conditions.
- Daily waste cover to reduce exposure to weather, pests, and hazards such as fires caused by lithium batteries.
How You Can Help
Utilizing the capacity of the Bayview Landfill allows Wasatch Integrated to maintain responsible disposal options for our communities. Small actions collectively reduce transfer costs and environmental impacts. You can support these efforts by:
- Participating in your city’s curbside recycling programs
- Keeping hazardous materials out of your waste and recycling carts
- Properly dispose of hazardous materials at the HHW Facility
